Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy

Exploring thoughts, feelings and patterns of experience

Our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and physical responses can influence one another in ways we don’t always recognise.

Sometimes these patterns are helpful. At other times, we may respond in familiar ways that no longer serve us, even when we understand what is happening.

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy combines Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), hypnotherapy and mindfulness, offering opportunities to explore these patterns and develop different ways of responding.

It is an evidence-informed approach, drawing on established psychological principles and research into CBT and clinical hypnosis. Studies have also found that combining hypnosis with CBT can improve therapeutic outcomes for some people, depending on the difficulties being addressed.

How might it help?

People seek therapy for many different reasons. Some come with a particular difficulty they’d like to address, while others want to understand themselves and their experiences more fully.

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy may be helpful with:

  • Anxiety, worry and stress
  • Fears and phobias
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Unhelpful habits and patterns of behaviour
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Managing persistent pain
  • Emotional responses to challenging situations

Our approach will depend on your circumstances, what matters to you and what you’d like to explore.

What happens in a session?

We begin with a conversation about what brings you to therapy and what you might find helpful.

We may explore the relationships between thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and behaviours, using approaches drawn from CBT, hypnotherapy and mindfulness.

Hypnosis uses attention, imagination, and suggestion in a focused, purposeful way. Rather than losing control or becoming unconscious, you remain aware and actively involved in the process, with the freedom to choose how you participate.

Hypnosis can provide opportunities to explore familiar experiences from different perspectives, rehearse new responses and work with patterns that may be difficult to change through conscious effort alone.

There is no single process that everyone must follow. We can decide together which approaches feel right for you, so our work develops in response to your needs.
