Zero Balancing

Exploring balance through the body

Our bodies respond to our experiences in many different ways. We may notice tension, discomfort, or a sense of holding, sometimes without realising how these patterns developed.

At other times, we may feel something is out of balance without knowing exactly what it is or why.

Zero Balancing is a gentle, hands-on bodywork approach that offers an opportunity to pause, notice and experience ourselves differently.

Developed by Dr Fritz Smith, an osteopathic physician and acupuncturist, Zero Balancing uses skilled touch to work with the relationship between the body’s structure and energy.

Rather than forcing the body to change, the practitioner uses gentle, sustained contact to invite greater awareness, ease, and integration.

How might it help?

People come to Zero Balancing for different reasons. Some seek support with physical tension or the effects of stress, while others want to explore a greater sense of balance and wellbeing.

People may find Zero Balancing helpful for:

  • Relaxation and easing feelings of tension
  • Supporting a sense of physical and emotional wellbeing
  • Developing greater body awareness
  • Taking time away from the demands of everyday life
  • Exploring habitual patterns of holding
  • Experiencing a greater sense of ease and connection with themselves

Each person’s experience of Zero Balancing is different. Some people notice a sense of relaxation or greater ease in their body, while others describe feeling more settled, grounded or connected with themselves.

There is no particular sensation or response that you need to achieve.

If you’d like to explore the approach further, Zero Balancing UK provides more information about the experiences and potential benefits of Zero Balancing.

What happens in a session?

We begin with a brief conversation about how you are, what brings you to the session and anything you would like me to be aware of.

You then lie comfortably on a treatment table, remaining fully clothed, while I work through a sequence of gentle holds, stretches and movements.

Zero Balancing uses a particular quality of touch, sometimes described as interface, in which contact is made with clarity and sensitivity, without forcing or manipulating the body.

The work often involves the bones, joints and soft tissues, with particular attention to how the body responds to contact.

You don’t need to concentrate, relax deliberately or make anything happen. You’re welcome to notice whatever arises, or rest.

Towards the end of the session, you can rest and gradually return to ordinary activity. We can also talk about your experience if you wish.

My approach to Zero Balancing

I’ve practised Zero Balancing since 1999, and over the years I’ve come to appreciate how much can sometimes happen when we give the body space without trying to direct its response.

Although Zero Balancing follows a recognisable structure, no two sessions are quite the same.

I work with sensitivity to your individual experience, letting the session unfold without imposing expectations about what you should feel or what needs to change.

Research and evidence

A developing body of research is exploring Zero Balancing and its potential contribution to health and wellbeing.

Early studies have reported encouraging findings, particularly regarding people’s experiences of relaxation, wellbeing, and integration. However, research remains early, and larger, well-designed studies are needed to establish its effectiveness for specific health conditions.

Zero Balancing is offered as a complementary approach to wellbeing, rather than a replacement for medical care.
